The local area and beyond
Westward Ho! village centre has small shops, some cafes and restaurants and seafront pubs and bars – so there’s always somewhere nearby to go to if you feel the need. We recommend walking to the village centre or seafront as it’s so quick and easy but there’s also a village centre car park near the shops and a small Tesco supermarket with its own car park too if you need to make the drive.
In high season, Westward Ho! can be very lively and busy and you’ll experience that real seaside vibe. Outside the peak summer weeks it’s quieter and more relaxed. Just choose to come at the time that suits your own preference best!
There are always supermarkets and shops nearby for groceries and supplies.
Westward Ho! also has surf schools and several surf shops selling a wide range of clothes and kit. Surfing is a popular pastime along the two mile long beach.
Take a look at the tourist map below for some of the other attractions. These include crazy golf, go carts, amusement arcades and a sea water swimming pool.

There are many other places to explore nearby so do visit them if you can. These include the pretty and historic village of Appledore, sitting on the banks of the River Torridge it’s a real contrast to Westward Ho! and a must to experience while you’re making a stay. There’s a good visitors map for Appledore if you click here.
Then there are the main local towns of Bideford and Barnstaple. Here you’ll find all the well known big supermarkets and more shops and facilities. Go further on for Ilfracombe, Combe Martin, Lynton and Lynmouth and Exmoor. Or, in the other direction along the coast road, we’ve world-famous Clovelly, Bude, Rick Stein’s Padstow, Tintagel and Port Issac (the fictional Port Wenn, as featured in the Doc Martin series).
Walks
Staying here means there’s a wide variety of walks for all tastes and abilities that can be started right from the front door. If you wish to leave the car parked up for your whole stay and not drive anywhere then it’s easy to do that. Either walk or use the bus to get around – there’s a bus stop just a short walking distance from the house. The bus goes to Bideford and Barnstaple and last stop is Ilfracombe.
If walking is your thing then you could try sections of the South West Coastal Path or the Tarka Trail, both are nearby. We’ve also a string of tried and tested other routes that we’ll be happy to share with you. To make it simple the routes can be easily downloaded or you’ll find them in printed form when you arrive.

Golf, surfing, cycling and more
The oldest golf course in England – the Royal North Devon – is virtually on the doorstep and visible from upstairs. The club welcomes visiting players – but arrange to book in advance to play a round. If you’re a board surfer or a kite surfer, you’ll already know that Westward Ho! beach is a fabulous location for these sports and there’s also fishing from the rocks. Cycling is really popular along the Tarka Trail and it’s easy to hire bikes from right alongside the trail in either Bideford or Barnstaple. There are many miles of mostly flat route to try.
The property and garden
Our spacious chalet bungalow looks out to the Atlantic Ocean and is just a five minute walk away from the famous Westward Ho! sandy beach and pebbleridge.
There’s safe parking for your vehicle on the drive right outside and you’ll be staying in a quiet residential cul-de-sac alongside some friendly neighbours.
The property has a large lounge/diner that looks right out to Bideford Bay. There are 2 double bedrooms and a single bedroom for guest use and everything you’ll need for your stay is provided, including high quality bedding and towels. There’s a large private and enclosed garden with a decking platform where you can sit and enjoy the sea views with a glass or two of wine or even a Devon cream tea. Here’s how the decking area looks and the view of the Bay that you’ll get from it

There’s also a compact kitchen with everything provided for preparing full meals and a bathroom with a large, powerful shower and a separate WC. Instant hot water is always available and there’s full central heating for non-summer months.
We feel that the property is best for a couple, or two couples who wish to stay. It’s also suitable for a couple plus one or two older children or young adults. If you’ve any questions about its suitability for you then please just ask.
